On 11 March 2020 (Wednesday), the NUS Students’ Political Association (NUSPA) kicked off the new NUSPA Policy Dialogue Series (PDS). In this inaugural dialogue, students from NUS, NTU, and SMU joined Minister for Law and Home Affairs K Shanmugam Sc to exchange their views on the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA). Since the enactment of POFMA, there have been many questions raised on it. Minister K. Shanmugam explained the global backdrop against which POFMA had been enacted, and provided an overview of how the law applies. He also explained that POFMA adds to the public discourse by giving people better access to facts. This is necessary to uphold transparency and integrity in a democracy.

Indeed, our student leaders had a meaningful session with Minister Shanmugam. They also had the opportunity to engage with other student leaders through a short break out session, consolidating the key insights shared by Minister Shanmugam. Many of them had also asked relevant questions and had learnt much from the policy dialogue.
